This summer will especially be considered hotter than most due to just the way the weather now works. And let’s face it, running the air conditioner (if you’re lucky enough to have one) will cost you an arm and a leg. One of the better tricks, for example (when it was affordable) was going to the movie theater, no matter what was playing, for the sake of being in a dark space with plenty of AC. Unfortunately, due to inflation, that is no longer an option for some.
Staying cool in general costs money. But what if I told you there was an affordable way to stay cool and productive at the same time? Here are a few summer activities you can employ to do just that!
Air Conditioning Comes With the Space!
If you work from home, it can especially cost you and will eat into your overhead if you have the AC running throughout the entire day. So what is a person to do? The answer is an obvious one-- working out of an office designed to stay cool enough to be productive in. Your average office, no matter the size, comes with its own air-conditioning system, due to most offices being designed to house multiple employees. Being hot is not productive, though some would argue that being too cold isn’t either (it’s easier to bring a sweater however, which is recommended, as some offices like to turn their temperatures down to sub-zero degrees). But should you rent an office? If you could find the right deal, maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to do so and having your own corporate office comes with its own advantages. Unfortunately, some of us just don’t have the budget to sign a yearly office lease just because your home house is hot due to the lack of air conditioning. However, a temporary office, for the summer season, could be just the ticket. A lot of co-working spaces rent by the month. And so, if its in your budget to rent for a couple of months, rather than the year, this could be the perfect solution. If you’re willing to commit for some time as well, you can even get a better deal than what is initially offered.
A Place To Get Together
Like we’ve mentioned in our last post, the office share can be utilized for more than just work. It can also be used to throw events; pretty much any general event that can be thrown in an office environment. Thinking outside the box, one could throw a “movie night” at an office share by renting a space that comes with AV-- a large television, or a projector for the authentic experience. Combined with a few snacks and the right movie and you’re on your way to having a great time.
Another idea to keep cool during the summer would be to throw a get-together. Whether its for the aforementioned “movie night” or some other activity you can involve friends and loved ones to share with. A game night would be a great activity in a co-working space, especially games that involve a large group of people – a few examples of these sort of games including card games, such as Poker or Bridge, or even something even more involving such as board games, like Monopoly or Scrabble. Maybe even turn that into a sort of tournament in order to get the max capacity of people involved. Feeling a little risky? Maybe offer some prizes to the winners of tournaments in order to get the competition going. There’s no end to the amount of fun that can be had when it comes to close friends and an evening of good competitive fun!
Summer Haven
Of course, adults are not the only ones who can utilize a co-working space during the summer. Under adult supervision, kids, especially those off for the summer, who find themselves with more time than they know what to do with, who always find a way to say that dreaded phrase “we’re bored!” can find some value in the co-working space. Even with pre-planned events like day camps, summer school or day care on offer, those are only limited based on time, and advanced enrollment, as well as payment in order to participate.
You could hire a babysitter, which will also cost money and who you’ll have to trust your kids with someone outside your usual circles. If they are old enough, you can leave them to their own devices, only you’ll have to trust your own kids not to get into any real trouble, which might be a hard sell, especially knowing that the best they can do is either sit inside in front of a screen until you get home, or go out and play with friends, who, under unsupervised circumstances, can get hurt or get into mischief that can turn into trouble, which isn’t really ideal.
But what about for those times where those options are not available?
Why waste the summer, especially if the impending school year is about to start? The co-working space would make for the perfect place to get your kids ready for the upcoming school year due to most office spaces being as relatable as your common classroom-- some schools even model classrooms after certain office environments. What’s also great is that some co-working spaces offer workshops in classroom configurations so it won’t be a hard sell. All you’ll need is a few supplies-- pen, paper, anything else the school would use to teach and a few lesson plans or activities you can download off the internet in order to provide an activity for your child that will not only be educational, as well as worth the time to do. This could be the “leg up” your child needs in order to start the new school year right.
A better option, especially if its within your budget is hiring a tutor for your kids to actually teach rather than doing it yourself or hoping the instruction provided in the lesson plan is enough. If so inclined, you can even hire a tutor that is comfortable teaching multiple children at once and then having parents of kids in the same grade-- friends and family of similar age -- also join in, for the full classroom experience. It doesn’t even have to necessarily have to be about the upcoming curriculum either-- this could be your chance to teach your kids something unique-- an instrument, a different language, a new exercise routine, life-saving CPR, a new craft, such as Origami or needle work. Maybe as a reward, after all lessons are done, you can even throw an impromptu pizza and movie party as a reward for a job well done. This will not only help in getting them ready for the school year ahead, they might even have some fun along the way.
Here we’ve given you a few examples as to how you can utilize the co-working space in order to beat the summer heat. There are probably more great ideas on how to do just that-- just remember to run your ideas through your co-working space’s office manager in order to figure out what exactly is allowed and what is not. In any case, try to stay out of the sun and drink plenty of water when you can!
